Helping Bernie
This short video focuses on Frank Nelson's campaign to help Bernie, a 25-year veteran of the Toronto Police who was stricken with stage four colon cancer.
Frank met Bernie through their shared medical treatments, where he learned that in addition to his illness, Bernie's wife, Dawn, suffers from a neurological disorder that restricts her to the use of a motorized wheelchair. The cost of battling both conditions had drained the couple's retirement funds and neither was able to work full-time. Their house was also suffering badly as Bernie was no longer able to do repairs and the cost of hiring help was beyond their means. The deck that wrapped the front and side of their house was close to collapsing, and it was essential for Dawn to be able to traverse from one part of the house to another as her chair was inhibited from going through parts of the house interior. She also needed to be able to get outside to care for her animals and to do what she could for upkeep of the grounds.
Frank responded by asking some volunteers for help, and together they put on a fundraiser at Buffalo Wild Wings in Park Place
Our crew came on-board at the beginning of the story, and we travelled to Bernie's house multiple times with Frank to see the dilapidated state of the deck, to record the fundraiser, to show the demolition, and then the reconstruction of the new deck. That full video is currently pending and we hope to show it here soon.
Below are some images taken by our crew while recording the various stages of Bernie's story.
