myTEAM TRIUMPH Canada - Captains and Angels, 2019
myTEAM TRIUMPH Canada (MTT Canada) is a registered Canadian charity operating entirely through the efforts of faithful volunteers and donors. Their goal is to enhance the lives of disabled children by merging their youthful enthusiasm with the physical abilities of able-bodied runners at events like marathons. To do this, they must raise money to buy specialized chairs that are designed specifically for the task.
Heather Morgan is a Barrie advocate for mobility who suffers from a neurological disorder that has defied diagnosis. She also sits on the Accessibility Advisory Committee for the City of Barrie.
Despite her significant challenges, Heather and her husband Trevor participate regularly as an assisted team in marathons and even triathlons across the province. Their goal is to have fun and live a healthy lifestyle while educating the public and showing that when there is a desire there is a way to achieve your goals, regardless of physical limitations.
The MEC Barrie Runninjas is a local running club who meet regularly to stretch their limits on different courses around our city. Heather arranged to borrow some of the running chairs from My Team Triumph Canada in Toronto. Then she recruited two enthusiastic local boys, Jaxon and Mathew, to be ‘Captains’ and for the MEC Barrie Runninjas to be their ‘Angels’.
We all met on a cold and snowy day in November of 2018, and this is what happened.
Our community programming is made possible by support from local businesses. We would like to thank the following sponsors of the Ontario Community Awareness Network
