Barrie Vigil Against White Supremacy
Alt-Right politics, Nazi parties, and racial prejudice are on the rise around the world.
On Friday, August 18, 2017, as many as 300 people representing a cross section of our mixed culture came to Barrie City Hall to protest the concept of white supremacy. The event also included a vigil in honour of Heather Heyer, a 32-year-old American woman who was killed when a 'white nationalist' ran his car into a crowd of civil rights protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Barrie residents showed the character and the courage to say no.
Speakers included Mayor Jeff Lehman, The City of Barrie, Ann Hoggarth, MPP for Barrie, Keenan Aylwin, Green Party Candidate, Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte, Wayne Monague, Barrie Native Friendship Centre, Shelly Skinner, Vice Chair Barrie Pride, and Aylan Couchie, Nipissing First Nation.
On this night the message was love is stronger than hate.
