COVID-19 - Barrie Community Rallies Behind Symptomatic Child, 2020
Jennifer Kaplinski is well known within the community for her work with Youth Haven Canada. A few weeks ago, in May of 2020, she posted on Facebook that her son, Triston, had been hit with symptoms that were in line with the Coronavirus and she was at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre where the young man had been admitted for observation.
Mother and son were eventually sent home with instructions for both to self-isolate until the tests came back. So, for several days their lives became consumed with COVID-19 and the care of a sick child.
The community responded with a car parade, get-well gifts, and demonstrations of love for both mother and son. In the end, the test results were negative, and it seemed likely the boy was stricken with a more standard stomach flu. Regardless, the result of the test is not so much the issue as the story of the family's journey through COVID-19. It is also reassuring to see how the community responded to one sick child facing a deadly international pandemic on a very personal level.
